Recently DoPT released a statement about two additional attempts for UPSC Civil Services candidates. There is no clarity on who the beneficiaries are, and for how long this order is valid.
The order says,
- “Two additional attempts to all categories of candidates w.e.f. Civil Services Examination 2014 with effect from 2014…“Does this mean, guys who have exhausted all their attempts are the beneficiaries, or even a guy who is yet to start writing Civil Services Exam is benefited ?Β In the latter case, will a General candidate have 6 attempts, OBC candidate have 9 attempts, and SC / ST candidate.
- “…with consequential age relaxation of maximum age for all categories of candidates, if required.?“There is no clarity on what ‘Consequential age relaxation mean?’Let us take the case of a General candidate who is 28, and has given 2 attempts. The question here is, will this candidate have 4 more attempts or just 2 more ?What is the upper limit for age relaxation ? Can a General Candidate who is 33 or an OBC candidate who is 35+ or a SC / ST candidate who is 37-38+ take up these exams ?
The government has to throw more light on this circular. It will certainly help the real beneficiaries to begin with their preparation. Probably one may have to wait for the CSP 2014 notification for further clarification.
I’ll update as I get more clarity on this matter. If any of you guys get more information, please do leave a message.

Hi Aditya,
As far as our understanding goes, the age limit will be reverted to 30, going ahead.

Hi Sanjana,
If you have been ordinarily domiciled in the state of Jammu and Kashmir during the period from January 1, 1980 to December 31, 1989, then you are eligible to appear for CSP 2015.

Dattatraya says
Dear Sir My date of birth is September 15, 1984. I have appeared for the the first time in UPSC pre conducted on 24 August 2014. I wanted to know whether i am eligible for UPSC pre 2015 as notification of UPSC pre 2014 is confusing. Please reply coz I am about jo join online coaching for Mains. Guide me whether i should join or not.
Ajay Sharma says
Plz reply…its very important to know before I leave my current job and before going to join coaching. …
Digi says
@Ajay – UPSC it is a norm to count age from 1st of August every year. It is NOT specific to this year. Next year too, it’ll be the same. As it is been the case for last couple of years.
Ajay Sharma says
Sir sorry for my too many questions but I need to clarify it….Sir I wnt to know that upsc counted the age frm 1st of August every year or only for this year…bcoz the whole process is already late..so?
Ajay Sharma says
Thankyou sir…. π
Digi says
@Welcome Ajay. If you consider other optional do let me know. Make sure you subscribe to our news letter where we send daily current affairs update.
:).
Ajay Sharma says
I used only two attempts before this….2014 is would be my 3rd attempt. ..aftr the aamendment may be I will get one more and it will be in 2016….
Digi says
@Ajay – You will get three more. 2014, 2015 and final one 2016.
Regarding Law as your optional, I tried to find details from friends. I haven’t got any authoritative answer yet. I may not be able to help you immediately, but if I find anything I’ll mail you at the earliest. The only information I could get was, that some institutes in Chennai are good for Law as your optional.
Ajay Sharma says
Noe the notification is out for CSE 2014, and the date will count frm 1 August 2014……and my dob is 17/07/85….so now how many attempts I have aftr the current relaxation?
Digi says
@Ajay – You have a maximum of 3 attempts, provided you haven’t exhausted your other attempts and if you are from General Category.
Ajay Sharma says
Thankyou sir…and plz inform me as soon as possible….
Because I wnt to start the course in the right and enough time…Thankyou
Ajay Sharma says
Can you plz tell me that which is the best institute for Law subject in IAS and Law is a good choice or not? Iam in 2nd year of LLB
Digi says
@Ajay – I’m not sure about Law as subject.
In 2012, a lot of Law candidates cleared the exam and many were in – below 100 ranks: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/kolkata/Kolkata-girl-ranks-84th-in-UPSC-examination/articleshow/19890824.cms
So I assume, Law is definitely good scoring subject. But you’ll need guidance from right candidates. In UPSC, as important the subject is, having a right guidance is important too. I’ll try and get more information for you.
Ajay Sharma says
Hello sir…now some how the picture is clear about the upsc notification and we are waiting for 31st may…..now my question is my dob is 17/07/85 and I am already eligible for 2014& 15…..so after this new change is iam eligible for 2016&17 or not? From the basis of old pattern of rules I used my two attempts and two are left 14&15
Digi says
@Ajay – From what we can infer from the earlier clarification, you are eligible for extra two attempts. Matter of another two days, notification will be out and all the doubts will be cleared.
All the best.
NSP Varma says

krithika says
Hello,
I am krithika ,My date of birth is 22/4/84 , I have not attempted for IAS exams till now and i am belongs to General category, does this age relaxation benefited people who has not even taken IAS exams before , and how many attempts i may get? kindly throw some light on it
thank you
Digi says
@Krithika – Yes. You too are benefited. You will get 2 attempts. You can attempt till you are 31 years (as you are born before Aug 01).
If you are serious about clearing the exam, you should be ready to slog a lot as you have very less time.
Do post here if you have any queries or if you need help. We will do our best.
All the best.
Ganesh says
Hello Sir, My Date of Birth is 9th August 1984, and i belong to the general category. Withous the present age relaxation i am eligible for the CSE 2014, as i would be 30 after 1st august only.
My question is am i eligible for CSE 2015 AND CSE 2016?
I would cross 32 only on 9 August 2016.
Regards,
Ganesh
Digi says
@Ganesh,
Yes, you are eligible. All the best.
Ravi says
Sir,
I am 31 years old(20/05/1983), & not even once have taken IAS exam due to some problem & I am preparing for KAS.
Now i have heard that Govt had given 2 years of age relaxation(32 years for GM).
So my doubt is am i eligible to take exam this year.
Digi says
Ravi – Assuming you belong to General Category, you are entitled for one attempt, which is this years attempt. If you belong to OBC, you have 3 more attempts, as you will loose the last one due to age bar issue.
Ravi says
Yes, i belong to GM,
Thanks Sir,
Really is i am going to get 1 attempt, it’s enough to me.
Digi says
Great. All the best Ravi. Do subscribe to our blog and get latest updates daily.
Ajay Sharma says
Thankyou sir….I just pray for the actual notification of 17th may…..Thanks for your reply sir…. π
Digi says
There are rumors doing about change in pattern / change of date of UPSC notification and such.
Don’t worry about them. Concentrate on exams. Whatever changes, if any, will be brought in, it’ll be for everyone.
All the best.
Ajay Sharma says
Sir it means 2014, 15 and 16????? Right? ???
Digi says
@Ajay,
Yes you are right. However, this holds good provided you have such number of attempts left.
So totally you have a maximum of 6 attempts, with the last attempt at 2016.
If you have any further doubts, please do let me know.
Regards,
Ajay Sharma says
Sir I know that iam eligible for 2014 and 2015, I whnt to know that is iam also benefited for two more attempts except 2014&15 after the latest changes????? Dob is 17/07/85?
Digi says
Ajay,
Consequential age relaxation will be applicable for you. Hence in your case, you are eligible. But since you are born before 1st August 1985, you will get only one extra attempt.
Regards.
Ajay Sharma says
Iam 29 yr old and I belongs to General category, my only two attempts are left 2014 &1……My question is that after two more attempts, is I will get 4 more attempts or just two what I already have???????
Digi says
Hi Ajay,
What’s your date of birth, and which years in the past have you given your attempt. If you tell me that, I’ll be able to tell you if you are eligible for more attempts or not.
Cheers.
abhishek says
