Scientists Help Framers save Rice from Salinity and Floods
- The Rice Research Station scientists have succeeded in developing new types of paddy that are tolerant towards two major problems, which is salt water intrusion and submergence.
- These challenges are commonly faced by the Kerala rice framers, especially in the low-lying areas.
- The researchers have introduced Sal-Tol in the Jyothi rice. Typically, Sal Tol is saltwater tolerant gene that is present in Pokkali Rice, which is rich in antioxidants. It is has been used in many of the salinity tolerant paddy breeding campaigns around the world.
