- Alloys with critical cooling rates low enough to allow formation of amorphous structure in thick layers (over 1 millimeter) are known as bulk metallic glasses (BMG). They are twice as strong as titanium, tougher and more elastic than ceramics, and have excellent wear and corrosion resistance.
- Bulk metallic glasses are now being used in consumer electronic industries, sporting goods industries, Industrial coatings for improved wear and corrosion resistance, as a replacement for depleted uranium in Kinetic Energy Penetrators for the military, casings for cell phones, scalpels, sporting goods such as bats and tennis racquets.
