- Pethia lutea or Citron Barb are already in endangered species following the categories and criterion of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)
- As per Unmesh Katwate from Bombay Natural History Society says due to “restricted distribution, fragmented populations and on-going threats to the habitats, Pethia lutea can be classified as an ‘Endangered’ species,”
- In west flowing rivers like systems of Konkan such as Ulhas, Kal, Kundalika, Savitri, Jagbudi and Shastri Pethia lutea is known and Pethia longicauda is found in Hiranyakeshi River in northern Western Ghat
