- Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board’s (BWSSB) water supply system supplies water to around 63 lakh people. The water scarcity can be resolved by:
- Recycling sewage water (will provide water for about 12 lakh people)
- Storing surface run-off water in tanks.
- Plugging leakages in the water supply system
Since the surface of Ponniyar and Arkavathy is rocky, rainwater cannot infiltrate and should therefore be stored in tanks. Silt must be cleared to improve capacity. Bangalore city has lost around 70% of its lakes and water bodies. Groundwater is being continuously abused, and this soon may result in its complete loss as infiltration of rainwater is around 6%. Groundwater in the Hebbal area was found to be around 4,000 years old.
