- The SC has directed the West Bengal forest dept to refrain from using any kind of contraceptives or sterilization methods on female elephants to control its rising population in the State.
- The State govt was in talks over administering PZP (Porcine zona pellucida) vaccine, which can prevent pregnancy in elephants for about a year, in order to mitigate the growing incidents of man-animal conflict.
- South Africa has previously used this to curb the growing population of elephants.
