- Unlike the earlier days way back in the 1990’s deaths while pregnancy is reduced, and according to WHO data shows a 45 % decrease in maternal deaths since 1990
- Maternal mortality mostly happens due to pre-existing medical conditions such as diabetes, HIV, malaria and obesity etc, and WHO systematic analysis reports it is similar to the proportion of deaths during pregnancy and childbirth from severe bleeding.
- India’s maternal mortality has gone down by 65 % from 1990 till date and if adequate care is given for pregnant women and those with existing medical conditions the mortality rates will futher decrease
- The global reduction of MMR has accelerated with a 3.5 % annual decline from 2000 to 2013, as compared to 1.4 per cent from 1990 to 2000.
- As per the UN report, 10 countries account for about 60 % of global maternal deaths with India leading the list at (50,000), Nigeria (40,000), Democratic Republic of the Congo (21,000), Ethiopia (13,000), Indonesia (8,800), Pakistan (7,900), United Republic of Tanzania (7,900), Kenya (6,300), China (5,900) and Uganda (5,900).
