- UK has announced The Genomes Project, a 4-yr £300 million project that aims to sequence the genomes of 100,000 NHS patients who suffer from cancer and less known genetic disorders by 2017.
- The idea is to transform the way cancer and other rare genetic disorders are diagnosed and treated. Understanding the genetic code will soon become fundamental to medicine and this is a step towards the same.
- The project is in partnership with Genomics England and Ilumnia, an American company that will deliver the equipments and infrastructure.
- DNA samples of many patients have already been collected.
- Cambridge Genome Campus of Wellcome Trust will see a new world class genome sequencing hub to be located alongside the acclaimed Sanger institute.
