• Major General Kristin Lund of Norway (56) declared by U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon as first ever woman head of a UN peacekeeping force.
• Major General Kristin Lund to come in place of outgoing Major General Chao Liu of China at UP peacekeeping mission in Cyprus
• Cyprus mission, UNFICYP, set up in 1964 to control fighting among Greeks and Turkish Cypriots
