Trade, Energy Ties on Modi’s Bhutan Agenda — ‘Hydel Projects Central for Bhutan and India’

  • Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay of Bhutan and Indian Prime Minister are discussing the hydro electric power projects, existing and new since Bhutan is endowed with abundant water resources
  • The bilateral cooperation has always been good between the neighbors and includes trade and investment, economic cooperation, development of hydropower, development assistance, cultural cooperation and most important of all, security interests
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet with Mr. Tobgay and members of Bhutan’s royal family, including King Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck
  • Bhutan Prime Minister also said that the country has always been good with all the political parties from India
  • India receives 1,416 MW of power from 3 hydroelectric projects and will receive 2000MW more power
  • One more hit in the good historical relations between the two nations was a meeting between former Bhutan Prime Minister and Chinese, where China had pushed Bhutan for full diplomatic
  • India expressed its displeasure and the officials said that “Bhutan is a sovereign country and it is up to Bhutan and its leadership to decide on this issue keeping their interests in mind.”
