Status of Child Beggars in India

Child beggars on the rise in Gurgaon

  • A recent survey has discovered that the child beggars in India earn huge amount of Indian as well as foreign currencies. Since they are not aware of how to convert the foreign currency into Indian rupees, they tend to play with them.
  • There are about 3000 families who earn around Rs.20, 000 each month by begging, and do not want to give up on their business. Their children are their main breadwinners.
  • About 95% of the children have not access to schools and education. Many contractors in Gurgaon have brought about 10% of the children from the rural areas of Jharkhand and Bihar, and pushed them into begging.
