- Sri Lanka has expanded the mandate of its Presidential Commission to investigate the role of the Sri Lankan Army and LTTE during the civil war.
- The move is seen by many as a shift in the country’s stance as the Commission was originally set up to look into complaints of enforced disappearances. The country had earlier claimed that its army was only involved in humanitarian operations.
- It has now expanded its international panel as well which will possibly consist of an Indian, Avdhash Kaushal of Rural Litigation and Entitlement Kendra (RLEK), a Dehradun-based NGO.
- The Indian High Commission ruled out its involvement in the same and believe this to be the result of a possible interaction with the person concerned.
- Sri Lanka, which had rejected a UN probe into its war crimes has now started its own mechanisms of investigating into alleged war crimes.
