Save Democracy Forum (SDF) Will Create Awareness on Essence of Gadgil Report

March 18, 2014 by KRS Leave a Comment

  • Save Democracy Forum (SDF) has embarked upon a series of programmes to create awareness & gather support for the implementation of the Madhav Gadgil-led Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel (WGEEP) report, public discussions for which will start at Kudremukh National Park.
  • SDF plan of action :
    • petitioned the President to consider the Gadgil report.
    • travel through the western ghats states distributing materials & books in local languages creating awareness on essence of Gadgil report.
    • campaign to scrap Yettinahole project as it may affect the region.
  • Gadgil Report :
    • seeks to conserve the Western Ghats (Biodiversity Hotspot) comprehensively.
    • provides restrictions on mining & industries in this fragile region, due to which State Governments want to ignore it & go for Kasturirangan report as an alternative.
    • talks of involving forest dwellers for conservation projects without being displaced.
  • Vested interests, industrial lobbies & political representatives were involved in creating panic among stakeholders that they would be displaced if Gadgil report is adopted.

Exams Perspective:

  1. Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel (WGEEP) report
  2. Western Ghats
  3. Biodiversity Hotspot
  4. Kasturirangan report
