- In an effort to build ties with Latin America and the developing nations, Russian President Vladimir Putin:
- Paid a surprise visit to Nicaragua, making him the first Russian President to do so.
- Visited Cuba, which was Russia’s Cold War ally, and also met with Fidel Castro, the Father of Cuban Revolution.
- Is keen on wooing regional leaders of Latin America with offers of increased investment and trade in return for their oil and bauxite.
- Signed bilateral agreements with Cuba including one to explore Cuba’s coast for oil.
- Is set to visit Brazil and Argentina where he will participate in the BRICS summit of emerging countries.
- Analysts believe he is also using the opportunity to thumb his nose at Germany and US for imposing trade sanctions against Russia over its annexation of Crimea and support for separatists in Ukraine.
