Russia Seeks China and India as Partners of Emerging Energy Alliance

  • Russia is constructing a gas pipeline and has extended support to China and further to India as well, a triangular energy partnership
  • Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitri Rogozin visited India and told gas pipeline from Russia to India would be “one of the largest infrastructure projects that could be conceived
  • During the BRICS summit Mr. Putin may propose the extension of the Russia-China gas pipeline to India
  • Post Ukrainian crisis Russia’s strategic shift towards the East, Russia positioned as a global energy supplier has already signed a $ 400 billion deal with China
  • Russia is in talks with the External Affairs Ministry in Indian is already working on strategic projects
  • Controversy generated by the proposed sales of Russian Mi-35 helicopters to Pakistan which would not undermine stability in South Asia as a chance of war between the two nuclear neighbours is now inconceivable
  • Going through an economic crunch Russia the NATO members are looking at diversifying its oil and military exports
  • Previously Russians wanted to sell helicopters to Pakistan but India purchased these aircraft for its own armed forces
  • The government opines that the helicopter issue would not come in between and India is strongly approaching Russia as partner in co-developing weapons, which include joint forays in making a fifth generation fighter jet and a multi-role transport aircraft
