Reforms in internet governance proposed by European Union

February 14, 2014 by KRS Leave a Comment

  • Current internet governance is US centric & needs to move towards global model protecting values of open & multi stakeholder governance
  • European Union (EU) opined that giving power to United Nations or International Telecommunications Union (ITU) will lead to conferring too much power to national governments
  • EU vouched for a clear timeline diluting US authority over ICANN & making it a more global agreement safeguarding open & unfragmented nature of internet
  • EU also vouched for a mediation body to scrutinise conflicts arising from contradictory national jurisdictions

Exams Perspective:

  1. Reforms in internet governance
  2. ICANN
  3. International Telecommunications Union (ITU)
