Philippines, Muslim rebels to sign peace treaty on March 27

March 16, 2014 by AmbitionIAS Leave a Comment

  • Philippines and Muslim rebels are to sign treaty on March 27 to stop one of Asia’s longest and deadliest rebellions. Took 17 long years for negotiation and finished in January, 2014.
  • The terms are :
    • Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) will disband its 12,000-member guerrilla force
    • Share power with Manila in the Muslim south of the mainly Catholic nation.
  • The rebellion has :
    • Claimed nearly 150,000 lives
    • Condemned big swathes of the south to poverty and physical violence
    • Also gave rise to smaller teams of Islamist militants, some allied to Al-Qaeda.
  • The signing is :
    • Anticipated to gain maybe not just the Bangsamoro (Filipino Muslims)
    • But the whole nation, and
    • Will radiate beyond boundaries to the local community, and maybe the entire world
  • The Philippines’ Muslim populace of around 5 million individuals consider the south as their ancestral homeland, and the MNLF has led the armed pursuit for self-reliance or autonomy since the very early 1970s.
  • After the peace deal signing, Aquino is to ask parliament to pass a “basic legislation” creating a Muslim self-rule location addressing 10% of the country’s land, with its very own authorities force, parliament and power to levy fees.
  • The legislation will be ratified in a local referendum, and the region would then elect its very own parliament in May 2016.

Exams Perspective:

  1. Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF)
  2. Rebellion in Philippines
