- Below poverty line people are significantly high in number and Rangarajan Committee has come up with a suggested formula which is better than Tendulkar Committee
- If the plan is approved by the center then Rangarajan Committee’s approach is to delink the estimation of poverty from a fixed level of consumption
- Around 370 million people are BPL and Tendulkar has estimated of 270 million in 2011-2012
- As per Committee’s recommendation is the bottom 35% for rural and 25% cut off for urban is to be defined as poor
- Report is being submitted on Tendulkar formula is for an absolute Poverty Line
- Rangarajan’s poverty line is not for use for inter-temporal poverty comparisons but for identifying the poor at any point in time for the purpose of policy-making and targeting
