NGT Order a Bitter Pill for UP Sugar Mill Discharging Effluents into Ganga

• Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, based Simbhaoli Sugar Mills, distillery gets NGT notice on taking steps to prevent discharge of polluting substances into river Ganga
• NGT move follows petitions by environmentalist Krishan Kant Singh and NGO Social Action for Forest and Environment (SAFE) to it on Ganges pollution
• Petitioners allege untreated and semi-treated discharge into Ganges by mill and distillery owner since 1943 affected dolphins and turtles habitats in the river
• NGT team finds discharges of spent wash and molasses into river via drains connected to Ganges
• In Delhi, NGT serves notices to Forest dept, PWD and over cutting of trees on PWD’s elevated corridor project
• Between Vikaspuri, Mukarba Chowk, PWD need to uproot 1,476 trees for its project
• Petitioner Aditya N. Prasad alleges 3 lakh saplings that were to have been planted to compensate for felling trees never planted
