- The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has set up 2 committees after hearing two petitions relating to the dumping of waste and debris in the Yamuna and the encroachments of Storm Water Drains (SWDs).
- The issue has been divided into 3 parts:
- Issues relating to drains coverage and the resulting pollution.
- Appropriate steps to ensure that Yamuna is free from pollution.
- Restoration and beautification of banks of river Yamuna.
- The first committee is to be headed by an officer not below the rank of Joint Secretary from Minister of Environments and Forests and is expected to:
- Inspect crucial places for data on the number of artificial and natural drains in Delhi.
- Study the drains that join the river.
- Gather data on the number of SWDs and the number of those that carry sewage directly or indirectly.
- The 2nd committee will be headed by Additional Secretary MoEF and Vice-Chairman of DDA and is expected to:
- Oversee the 1st committee.
- Ensure compliance within 2 weeks.
- Consider the changes to be made to the existing schemes.
