New Tech May Reduce Bypass Surgeries by 50%

  • Angioplasty is the best for blocked arteries so far, a new technology will help in avoiding the angioplasty
  • Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR) a procedure to measure to measure pressure an abnormal narrowing in a blood vessel
  • Intervention cardiologist Dr G Sengottuvelu of Apollo Hospitals has studied the clinical use of FFR and found out that stenting procedure will come down by 42% and bypass surgery by 50%
  • FFR is a guide wire into the artery which measures the blood pressure either sides of a block and feeds the data on the monitor
  • By calculating the ratio range between 0.8 and 1 there is no need for invasive procedure, this technique costs one-fourth of an open heart procedure
  • Fractional Flow Reserve among Indian patients study screened 59 patients with 81 blocked vessels and a result of this 45 required stents and the rest surgery further to that through FFR only 26 needed stents and three surgeries
