New Price Fixation Policy a Must, Say Farmers

May 27, 2014 by Admin Leave a Comment

  • Farmers under the aegis of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) have urged Karnataka government to determine procurement prices fixation policy of agricultural produce.
  • KRRS women’s wing leader Sunanda Jayaram led the protest and Sangha members staged a dharna in support of their demand due to :

    • depleting income,
    • rise in input costs,
    • cultivation was rendered uneconomical.
  • The KRRS said:
    • No governments since Independence had taken the effort to ameliorate their difficulties.
    • government made no effort to provide electricity to farmers to operate irrigation pump sets and
    • failed to create an institutional mechanism for timely purchase of agricultural produce.
  • It demanded the

    • implementation of recommended scientific measures to fix purchase price by the M.S. Swaminathan Committee report on agriculture.
    • government should ensure power supply on 24×7 basis to farmers, and
    • crackdown on middlemen and agents in agricultural marketing.
