National Organ & Tissue Transplantation Organisation to come up soon

  • First National Organ & Tissue Transplantation Organisation (NOTTO) is coming up in Safdarjung Hospital latest initiative by the Union Ministry to ensure safety of organs and tissues
  • Organs and Tissues will be collected safely from donors safely to patients in need at a minimized cost and the organisation will maintain computerised networks with 24 identified transplant and organ retrieval centres in Delhi
  • The organisation will be commissioned within 18 months, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan he said that they wanted to see a body pledging revolution in India
  • He further added that “We want to put in place a state-of-art interface system between organ and recipients.”
  • A very few hospitals have control information on organ availability and the minister said “Soon public institutions will make possible for speedy and effective distribution of kidneys, hearts, lungs, bones, tissues, cornea, skin and cells at token cost to those who can pay and free to the poor”
  • Indian society is convinced for a revelation in so far as organ donation and transplant is concerned and the Ministry wants to encourage and regulate organ donation in the country
  • NOTTO next meeting will be with the the Central Council of Health on setting up NOTTO-like institutions in all State Capitals
  • Ministry has appealed to change the mindset of the youth and bring a revolutionary, currently organ donation from brain dead is ordered by government which is facilitated by law but this is not enough
  • The rate of organ donation in India is just only 0.16% per million populations, compared to 40 in Spain and 35 in the United States,” said the Minister
