MSF Warns India Against U.S. ‘designs’ On Drug Patents

  • Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), an international medical humanitarian organisation, has said that the U.S. is pushing India to play by its rules on intellectual property.
  • The MSF urged India to take steps to check “the U.S. government’s heightened efforts to undermine access to affordable medicines from India.”
  • MSF said millions of people across the globe relied on Indian low-cost generics, but the U.S. had been scaling up pressure against India’s patent law.
  • The MSF alleged that the U.S. pressure already appeared to be having an impact as the Indian government had been delaying a decision to allow generic production of an exorbitantly priced patented anti-cancer medicine that was unaffordable in the country
  • This action was recommended by a Health Ministry expert committee to increase access to affordable versions.
