Modi To Prioritize NSG Issues

July 24, 2014 by Admin Leave a Comment

  • In his classified address to scientists at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) PM Modi asked them to target tripling the nuclear power generation by 2023 and also said that private players will have a greater role in making nuclear energy commercially viable and competitive with other sources of clean energy.
  • In all his upcoming bilateral visits, Mr. Modi has defined key nuclear issues indicating the govt’s plan to go full throttle with plans for nuclear energy production, something which UPA had not focussed on due to protests in various parts of the country.
  • In his meeting with US and Russian representatives, he is expect to work on sorting out various issues and address the issues of suppliers liability respectively.
  • During the Australian PM’s visit to India, there is expected to be talks about Australian govt’s agreement to sell Uranium to India.
  • India and Japan are also expected to work out a nuclear cooperation agreement when the PM travels to Japan.
  • The extremely good rapport between the Prime Ministers of the two countries have led to high expectations with Japan looking to obtain a commitment from India on signing the NPT and fissile material cut-offs soon.
  • India will also oppose the ‘non-proliferation’ lobby in its quest to build up nuclear power as an alternate source of energy.
