- As insurgents captured a city close to Baghdad and home to four natural gasfields, the Iraqi presidency has called for a special parliamentary session to be held to select the President and Prime Minister as part of an all-inclusive government that can keep the insurgents at bay.
- The call for a national salvation govt elected by the people, proposed by prominent Sunni figures has been dismissed by the govt.
- The militants, comprised mainly of Sunni, want to form an Islamic Caliphate in the middle east and have captured Iraqi cities bordering Syria, even stealing weapons. The insurgency has claimed over hundreds and displaced million people.
- Iraqi forces also launched an assault on one of the cities held by the militants and seized back control. US urged Iraqi leaders to unite to fight the insurgency and warned of military action if it delays political reforms.
