- Maharashtra Police have been instructed by Bombay High Court to form a panel to probe custodial deaths in the state
- If the problem has to be tackled then the police have to ask independent agencies to investigate all such cases, the court further has asked an explanation from the DGP and come up with solutions shortly
- Between 2000 and 2011 custodial deaths are 1242recorded 297 deaths from Maharashtra alone as per the National Crime Records Bureau data
- Most of the cases were not registered and over the years the conviction rate has remained zero which is a worrying factor says experts
- A senior advocate points out on state as they are involved in protecting the officers, police officers have full authority on whatever they want to do and no proper laws to protect those in custody
- 14 FIRs and 19 charge sheets were registered out of 297 custodial deaths and advocates opines independent, reliable agency investigates the case else guilty officers will continue to go scot-free
- As per the HC order instructed that all police stations should have a senior police officer at night and the police should not be allowed to interrogate under trials after midnight
