- Prominent legal experts believe that the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) should be scrapped because:
- Biometrics are not reliable in a country like India where 2-5% of people do not have fingerprints that work.
- Companies handing biometrics data have close link with intelligence agencies thereby compromising the privacy of the citizens.
- After a memorandum of understanding between the Registrar General of India and UIDAI, the National Population Register is acting illegally in collecting biometrics.
- There is too much obscure information as far as the scheme is considered as there has been no audit of the system.
- It has turned into a ‘unique identification scheme’ rather than a ‘unique identity’ scheme as its helping agencies identify us.
- There may be hidden agenda behind creating a citizens’ roster through invasive data harvesting.
