Kidney-pancreas transplant

  • Insulin is an essential hormone for human body, which is produced by pancreas. It regulates the blood sugar levels in body. In case of the failure of pancreas, it may cause diabetes, Type 1 or Type 2.  If this condition continues for a long period, it may even result in kidney failure.
  • A team of surgeons had performed transplant of combined kidney and pancreas on women of 46 year at the Apollo hospital. They placed kidney on the left side and opposite to this, they placed pancreas on the right side, at a little higher angle.
  • It performs like the regular pancreas. Arteries and veins are connected to these transplanted organs with their excretory outlets leading to the intestines.
