- In-line with the Supreme Court’s recognition of transgenders as a 3rd gender, Karnataka State govt has formed a 11-member committee to frame a policy for transgenders in the state.
- The policy will suggest measures for:
- Their socio-economic devp.
- Address health, education and psychological aspects
- Opportunities for proper employment and entrepreneurship.
- Address issues of dignity associated with them.
- The subcommittee is expected to submit a draft policy to the Department of Women and Child Development by July and includes the Managing Director of the Karnataka State Women Development Corporation and officials of the departments of health, education, women and child development, and planning.
- Karnataka State Planning Board will consult with the Institute of Social and Economic Change (ISEC) and Karnataka Health Promotion Trust (KHPT and study the status of transgender persons in the State.
- It will also study the functioning of the boards set up by Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh govt for the same.
