- Studies have indicated that Indus – the world’s most populated river basin shared by India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and China – is likely to see an average increase in temperature by around 4°C by 2080.
- Winters in the Indus basin could be warmer by 3.9 to 5.1 °C, and summers by 3.4 to 4.6 °C. However, the changes are not uniform across all regions of the basin.
- This is due to the quicker snow melts in the basin’s northern highlands (comprising parts of the Hindu Kush, Karakorum, and Himalayas), warmer winter in the plains and frequent flash floods predicted over the next seven decades.
- The changes affect people’s livelihood and force farmers to change their crops and cropping patterns.
