Indian Security Is Anemic

May 3, 2014 by Admin Leave a Comment

  • Train bombing at Chennai saw Congress conjecturing various motives, BJP suggesting that it was an attempt against Narendra Modi and the raising of various questions such as the role of the NIA were raised that eventually led to the sidelining of the whole issue itself.
  • The issue here is that of safety, of why has it now become increasingly difficult for citizens to commute to any place, or even walk down a lane without fearing for their security in one form or another.
  • Some unfortunate statistics:
    • Despite rapid expansion of police force and increased investments in technology post 26/11, training standards and personnel skills are below par.
    • In specialist skills such as forensics, staffing is acutely deficit.
    • Staffing deficits of about 33% in Intelligence services that form the vital force of national security.
    • Despite steady expansion of the numbers in Railway Protection Force, occurrences of serious crimes including rape, burglary and murder in the trains are on a rise.
    • Untrained personnel fail to understand the beeps of metal detectors, and also underutilize the provision of frisking passengers and luggage to ensure safety.
  • There should be higher standards of accountability of officers in charge.
