Indian Football’s Indian Super League

  • All India Football Federation (AIFF) announced the eight franchisees of its Indian Super League (ISL) promoted by ISL, Star India and Reliance, with the latter as its main sponsor with a 15-yr marketing contract with AIFF. The first edition is scheduled to held from September to November this year.
  • The franchisees include:
    • THE G-8 Delhi: Sameer Manchanda led Den Network
    • Bengaluru: Sun Group
    • Goa: Dattaraj Salgaocar, Shrinivas V Dempo, Venugopal Dhoot (Videocon)
    • Guwahati: John Abraham & Shillong Lajong
    • Kochi: Sachin Tendulkar & PVP Ventures
    • Kolkata: Sourav Ganguly, Harshavardhan Neotia, Atletico Madrid, Sanjeev Goenka, Utsav Parekh
    • Mumbai:Ranbir Kapoor and Bimal Parekh
    • Pune: Salman Khan with Kapil Wadhawan and Dheeraj Wadhawan of the Wadhawan Group
  • BASE PRICE OF EACH TEAM: Rs 12 crore
  • HIGHEST PRICE: Kolkata (Rs 18 crore approx) Guwahati, Goa, Kochi were sold at a lesser price than the rest.
  • TOTAL PURSE SPENT: Rs 120 crore (approx)
  • The likes of Manchester United star Dwight Yorke, former Arsenal and French star Thierry Henry, former Argentina striker Hernan Crespo and former Swedish star Fredrik Ljungberg are being considered for the marquee players of the teams.
  • World class infrastructure is being set up for the the U-17 FIFA World Cup, and the AIFF has expressed its interest to host host 2015 and 2016 FIFA Club World Cup.
  • The I-League will remain the substratum of the game, with the ISL being held as an additional tournament.
