- Indian doctors in Nigeria have denied rumours of being forced to treat patients of Ebola but have requested the Indian High Commission to intervene and help them return back to India.
- Ebola virus hasn’t reached the region where they are located, but has reached a nearby place spreading fears of possible contraction.
- The hospital authorities have meanwhile accused them of relinquishing their responsibilities towards the patients, with reports of the authorities having even threatened and withholding passports of the doctors.
- The authorities have denied the rumours and have accused them of abandoning the patients while many other Indian doctors have continued to work with the patients.
- Chapter five of the Indian Medical Council (Professional conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002, says, “When an epidemic occurs a physician should not abandon his duty for fear of contracting the disease himself.”
- Ebola virus has been spreading rampantly in the region claiming the lives of many doctors and nurses as well.
