Indian-born scientist Rituparna Bose uses new method to identify fossils

February 21, 2014 by KRS Leave a Comment

  • Indian-born scientist Rituparna Bose from Newyork University has used a new method called Geometric Morphometrics to identify fossils 400 million years old, especially in the Ohio & Michigan regions.
  • This method helps in studying the shape of organisms & in studying the subtle differences between species & understand how they changed temporally.
  • Presently, plant classification is based on visual assessments of external size & shapes, that is, organisms that look different from each other are grouped differently, making it difficult for scientists to measure subtle differences between species, especially where no genetic & behavioural data are available.

Exams Perspective:

  1. Geometric Morphometrics
