- According to data released by Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), 70% of the buildings that will stand by2030 have not yet been constructed, indicating the massive surge in construction that the country is likely to experience in the next 15 yrs.
- In contrast, 80% of the buildings that will stand in UK by the end of 2050 have already been constructed.
- This is a major cause for worry since buildings already consume:
- 40% of energy use
- 30% of raw material use
- 20% of land and water use.
- They also generate:
- 40% of carbon emissions.
- 30% of solid wastes.
- 20% of water effluents.
- Some measures to alleviate the oncoming crisis:
- Judicious use of air conditioners since they tend to become energy guzzlers.
- High quality insulation of buildings to prevent high energy losses.
- Conduct workshops on energy-saving strategies for architects, engineers and prospective owners of flats and also encourage traditional wisdom on construction.
