- Foreign secretary level talks is called off, this is after Pakistani High Commission has decided to engage with Hurriyat leaders
- Sujatha Singh, Foreign Secretary told about it just after Pakistani High Commissioner Abdul Basit met the leader of Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party Shabir Shah
- She further said that “with these so called leaders of the Hurriyat undermines the constructive diplomatic engagement initiated by Prime Minister Modi in May on his very first day in office”
- As per a government statement inviting the Hurryat leaders by the Pakistan’s High Commission does raise a question about Pakistan’s seriousness, it also shows the negative approach and interference with India’s internal affairs
- Officials from Pakistan told “move to cancel talks a setback to the efforts to promote good neighbourly relations with India,”
- Meeting Kashmiri leaders was scheduled long ago prior to India-Pakistan talks but this came as a “surprise” to India
