- Indian Medical Association (IMA) has started a nation-wide campaign targeted at doctors to reduce the indiscriminate prescriptions of antibiotics, through workshops, talks and pledges on ‘rational use of antibiotics’, and create awareness in people about the dangers associated with extensive use of antibiotics.
- The antibiotics that people use commonly occurring diseases are Erythromycin, Azithromycin, Amoxicillin, Ciprofloxacin and others whose sale continue despite governmental checks and prohibition of over-the-counter sale of antibiotics.
- Increased antimicrobial resistance is attributed to their overuse, misuse and indiscriminate use by doctors, nurses and pharmacists and self-medication by patients.
