Hypoxia Driving away Fish

  • Overuse of synthetic fertilisers may accelerate process of fish moving away from waters off western coast of India. Process called hypoxia.
  • Warning came from National Institute of Oceanography in Goa, decries lack of awareness among people on the matter
  • India’s west coast is among 400 sites across globe accounting for incidents of hypoxia on a large scale, results in creation of dead zones
  • Reasons :
    • impact of climate change,
    • increasing nitrogen contamination of water,
    • fast reduction of oxygen in water.
