‘Govt. Should Constitute New Panel on Western Ghats Issue’

June 10, 2014 by Admin Leave a Comment

  • The Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha has requested State and Union governments not to implement reports by ecologist Madhav Gadgil.
  • The sangha has demanded that the government should constitute a committee comprising social scientists, environmental experts with adequate representation of members of various political parties
  • Keeping in mind the wide spread Western Ghats across six states a comprehensive plan for the protection of the fragile ecosystems and livelihood has to be made
  •  Action should be taken against illegal and indiscriminate mining, quarrying, poaching and felling of trees
  • These reports are at best a bureaucratic exercise without any democratic approach,” he said. If Gadgil report is implemented, Mr. Manapade said basic developmental and agricultural activities would be restricted in thousands of villages as they would be declared as ecologically-sensitive zones.
  • The most effective conservators of the bio-diversity are the tribal communities in and across these regions
