‘GM Crops will be Put on the Back Burner’

  • New Union Agriculture minister in the Modi govt makes a u-turn over UPA’s policy of using GM seeds, says it will be used only when absolutely necessary
  • Keeping in mind possibility of poor monsoon, states told to keep 10 % of Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana funds to deal with any contingencies
  •  States also advised to keep stocks of short duration crop seeds and seeds that can be sown late
  • To help small, marginal farmers, work on PM’s Rural Irrigation Project will be taken up across the country to complete pending irrigation projects
