Global Powers Sign A Statement on Sustainable Fishing

  • Number of the world’s top fishing powers finalized a statement in Greece to market sustainable handling of seafood stocks.
  • The signatories are: the EU, United States, Japan, Philippines, Colombia and Indonesia.
  • They pledged to help, to deal with fishing overcapacity, by :
    • Developing worldwide fishing vessel records,
    • Restricting the quantity of licenses and vessel tonnage, and
    • Getting rid of fisheries subsidies that add to overcapacity and over-fishing.
  • In accordance to the European Commission :
    • The EU imports 70% of its seafood consumption
    • In general, the bloc accounts for 25% of the world’s seafood resources.
  • Some progress has been made. In 2013, 25 stocks had been fished sustainably in the North Sea and Atlantic, 5 times more than in 2009. This is anticipated to boost to 31 stocks in 2015.
  • Greenpeace says EU nations should scrap big and destructive commercial fishing vessels & change towards small-scale low-impact fishing, because it :
    • is more environmentally sustainable
    • produces jobs and
    • aids regional communities.
