Genome Sequencing In India

  • Genome sequencing refers to the sequence of the entire genome (half the set of its chromosomes) of an organism. This is different from gene sequencing which refers to the sequencing of a particular gene to look for anomalies in it.
  • India has so far sequences the genomes of many organisms including many bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Bacillus sp, viruses such as Chikangunya virus, Dengu virus, Hepatitis C virus and also that of Chickpea, Rice, Zebrafish among many others.
  • In 2009, India successfully sequenced the genome of an individual. And recently, it successfully sequenced the genome of Peanut.
