- In a desperate attempt to counter roadside blasts and suicide explosions adopted by insurgents, Middle East govts are using cheap and quickly manufactured barrel bombs against their enemies.
- ‘Barrel Bomb’ – a large container consisting of fuel, chemicals or explosives, scrapes of metal are often dropped from helicopters.
- Also called as ‘flying IEDs’ (Improvised Explosive Devices), these bombs can kill a large number of people, including unintended victims.
- Concerns have increased ever since evidences suggesting their use by Iraq and on the civilian populations in Syria and Sudan have emerged. This has spurred the US to warn Baghdad to immediately put an end to its use.
