Kamala Harris (50), California’s Attorney-General of Indian descent, has announced her intention to contest for the Senate seat which is to be vacated by Barbara Boxer.
If she wins, Ms. Harris, who was also widely tipped to lead the race for the U.S. Attorney-General after Eric Holder announced his resignation, will make history by becoming the first ever U.S. Senator of Indian origin.
There have been several Indian-American Congressmen in the House of Representatives, including current member Ami Bera and retired member Dalip Singh Saund
This week, an unnamed source, speaking to the LA Times , spoke of Ms. Harris’ bid for the Senate
Her campaign appeared to get an early boost from an announcement on 12.01.2015 by California’s Lieutenant-Governor Gavin Newsom
Gavin Newsom who is also a Democrat told that he would not run for the seat, thus averting an “ugly battle between the pair.
Gavin Newsom and Kamala Harris share many of the same supporters also have national profiles and both are from the Bay Area and are popular among the liberal wing of the Democratic Party
Ms. Harris’ links to India come from her mother, oncologist Shyamala Gopalan, who emigrated to the U.S. from Chennai in the 1960s.
Her father is Stanford University economics professor Donald Harris, a Jamaican-American.
Ms. Harris, a two-term Attorney-General, may face stiff competition in her senatorial bid from former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and billionaire environmental activist Tom Steyer
