Devyani Arrested In Spite Of Having Diplomatic Immunity
- Indian ambassador, Devyani Khobragade had ambassadorial immunity as the Special Advisor to the U.N. The immunity status was applicable to her, when she was arrested on visa fraud charges in 12th December 2013.
- The letter from United Nations Assistant Secretary General for Legal Affairs confirms her ambassadorial immunity. Her appointment as the Special Advisor was done much before Manmohan Singh visited the U.N. General Assembly session.
- As per the Convention on the Privileges and immunity of the U.N, all the personnel exercising their duties during the conventions and conferences arranged by the United Nations, are entitled to immunity and all other travel privileges. It is not applicable only if the meetings and conventions take place in the same countries from where they come from.
