- As part of its Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation (LLRC) initiative, the Sri Lanka President directed a Commission of Inquiry appointed by him to probe the roles of Sri Lankan army and the rebel Tigers, for alleged violation of international humanitarian law during the nearly 30 year war.
- This comes nearly 3 months after the UN called for an international probe into the allegations of human rights crime in which the country had rejected and refused co-operation.
- The Commission was appointed in 2013 to look into cases of disappearances.
- 3 former UN war crime prosecutors and experts have now been roped in advice the committee which has been asked to:
- Investigate and report on “the principal facts and circumstances that led to the loss of civilian life during the internal armed conflict.
- Probe the direct or indirect involvement of any group or institution in the violations of international human rights law.
- To probe LTTE’s role in the use of civilians as human shields, recruitment of child soldiers and sources of finances.
