- Environmentalists and naturalists are shocked to see firecracker manufacturing units in forests like Grizzled Giant Squirrel Sanctuary, Srivilliputhur
- Wildlife Association of Rajapalayam (WAR) say one of the units has started manufacturing crackers at Vellappottal near Watrap in Virudhunagar district test the crackers every one hour
- Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), does not allow any non-forestry activity in a 10-km radius of the ecologically sensitive zone of any sanctuary
- The localities’ are being disturbed by the factories and the waste disposals are being dumped in water bodies
- At Aayadharmam, another village in the vicinity, a cracker unit has come up without proper permission, and half the construction work is over, say WAR members.
- Wildlife authorities are taking serious steps and looking up on the matter as a priority if the units are being set up within the premises or outside the premises
- Two units have been set up within 4.5 km of the sanctuary and there has been no step taken to check the matter
