Clean Energy Sector Misses Target Addition

May 11, 2014 by Admin Leave a Comment

  • Report of Renewable Energy sector this year:
    • Clean energy capacity addition stood at 3640 mw falling short of the target of 4325 mw for 2 yrs in a row as wind, solar, small hydro and biomass segments added lower than their target capacities.
    • The cumulative grid-interactive installed capacity in the sector crossed 30,000 mw.
    • 145 mw of off-grid/ captive power generation capacity from different renewable energy sources were added.
    • Wind segment contributed the highest capacity addition and its total installed capacity stood at 21,136 mw. This was followed by small-hydro, bagasse-generation, solar, biomass and waste-to-power segments.
  • Last year, target was missed despite strong solar contribution, but wind sector was affected due to discontinuation of tax depreciation benefits, lack of clarity on continuation of generation based incentives (GBI), besides issues related to grid connectivity & evacuation of wind power in states like Tamil Nadu.
  • This year, re-introduction of generation-based incentive (GBI) helped in recovery.
