China’s economic interests in Sri lanka

  • SriLankan foreign minister is on his visit to China to establish deeper & strategic ties
  • China has evinced interest in maritime connectivity & has invested in major port project at Hambanthota
  • Both are contemplating an FTA (Free Trade Agreement). It would be their second such engagement after their Rubber-Rice Pact of 1952
  • China is the biggest investor in SriLanka providing upto $4 Billion for infrastructure projects in road, ports & rail, It has replaced India & Japan, which were previously the highest investors
  • Both are also contemplating a ’21st Century Maritime Silkroute’, apart from people-people contacts & co-operation in Disaster Prevention
